Council Approves Timeline for New Official Community Plan

In July, Council approved a timeline for the completion of the new Official Community Plan, which would see a proposed plan go to public hearing in early 2012.

After receiving feedback on the draft plan and engaging with more than 1,300 citizens between April and June 2011, staff felt that more time was needed to ensure that the final plan incorporates and reflects the values of Victoria citizens. The next few months will provide staff with an opportunity to review and incorporate feedback.

To date, the project has engaged with more than 6,000 citizens.

Public Feedback Report on the Draft Official Community Plan to be Presented to Council this Thursday

On Thursday, July 21, 2011, staff will present a report to Council on the most recent phase of engagement, which took place from April to June, 2011. During this phase, staff engaged with the community to collect feedback from citizens on the draft Official Community Plan.

The report presented on Thursday provides Council with a summary of the feedback and will also ask Council to make a decision regarding the final timeline for the Offical Community Plan’s completion.

Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback on the draft Official Community Plan.

Staff are now analyzing all of the comments and suggestions received between April and June 2011 at open houses, meetings with community groups, along with the large volume of written feedback, complete surveys, and emails, and are preparing a report back to Council. We will update the website with more information regarding the next steps in the Official Community Plan process shortly.

The City has prepared a draft Official Community Plan (OCP), which is now ready for your feedback.

Join us for an open house event and learn more about this important plan for Victoria. Come and tell us how you feel Victoria should grow and change over the next 30 years.

Review display panels illustrating different aspects of the plan and speak with staff who can answer your questions. Tell us what’s important to you.

Can’t make it to an open house? There are several other ways you can get involved.

Thursday, April 28 at The Atrium, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Saturday, May 7 at Victoria West Community Centre, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Saturday, May 14 at Fairfield Community Place, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Thursday, May 26 – Community Cafe for Youth (13-24) at Habit, 552 Pandora, 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Tuesday, May 31 at Oaklands Community Centre, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Report on OCP public review process approved

On April 72011, Council received a draft version of the new Official Community Plan and approved a strategy for public review of the draft plan. The review phase includes public engagement activities and events from now until June 10, 2011. Engagement techniques include coffee talks, open houses, online survey and a plan summary delivered to Victoria households and businesses.

On Thursday, April 7, 2011, Council will receive a draft version of Victoria’s new Official Community Plan. Staff will also present a proposed plan for public engagement on how the community can learn more and provide feedback on the draft plan.

On August 26, 2010, Council approved a report outlining general directions and a new land use model for the updated Official Community Plan. The report was informed by input received in community engagement activities over the past several months.

Following Council direction, staff will prepare a draft plan in the fall for submission to Council in early 2011. Further public engagement will take place throughout 2011, providing Victoria citizens an opportunity to provide more input on Victoria’s updated Official Community Plan once it is in draft form, and prior to it being adopted later in the year.

Feedback received by participants in community engagement activities over the past several months will help to inform a report presented to Victoria City Council on Thursday, August 26, 2010. Following Council consideration and direction, a draft plan will be prepared in the fall for submission to Council in early 2011.

Community feedback that will inform the report includes information received through two Community Forums in March and June, Community Circles, Citizens Insight Councils, two community surveys, as well as meetings with many community groups including community associations, youth, community service providers, members of the business community, and arts and culture groups. The feedback received from the public over the past five months has helped to develop four scenarios that describe possible growth directions for Victoria over the next 30 years. They will be discussed at the upcoming Community Forum June 25 and 26 at Victoria Conference Centre. If you aren’t able to attend, you can also tell us what you think by completing an online survey

Community Forum Workshop Schedule Posted

The schedule of workshops for the upcoming Community Forum has now been posted.

The registration and information table will be open throughout the day. Individuals may drop in at anytime. Friday’s information and sessions will repeat on Saturday with the same material presented on both days. People may drop in and participate on either day or both Friday and Saturday.
