Future Growth Options for Victoria
Four scenarios that describe different directions Victoria could follow as it grows and changes over the next 30 years are illustrated below. These scenarios were developed based on ideas contributed by the community during engagement activities that took place in 2010.
The scenarios were presented at the Community Forum June 25 and 26, where participants were able to complete a survey expressing which scenario they preferred, what they liked most about it, least about it, and what changes could be made to improve it. The survey was also available online from June 25 to July 11, 2010 for those unable to attend the community forum.
The outcome of the survey, combined with workshop content from the June 25 and 25, 2010, informed a report presented to Council in August 2010.
Scenario 1 – Growth in the Core Area
What we heard: “Concentrate new residential and commercial development in and around downtown to create a lively and vibrant urban atmosphere.”
Scenario 2 – Growth Focused on Primary Transit Corridors
What we heard: “Concentrate new residential and commercial development near transit so that more people can and do use transit in daily life.”
Scenario 3 – Diverse Villages
What we heard: “No one should need to go very far to get the essentials. The villages are wonderful. Make villages a bigger part of life and use them to locate amenities close to where people live.”
Scenario 4 – Growth Focused Near Waterfront and Green Spaces
What we heard: “Integrate a mix of uses, buildings and housing throughout the city’s neighbourhoods, putting new growth close to existing community, green space and waterfront amenities.”
